SERPENTINE
a short film by FIFTH WALL FEST
featuring costume design by SASSA JIMENEZ
directed and choreographed by MADGE REYES
SERPENTINE is a modern-day probe into the revered Serpentine Dance by modern dance pioneer and stagecraft innovator Loie Fuller. The in-house production is a study of the source piece, popularised by Fuller in the Art Nouveau scene of the 1890s. It features the works of like-minded artists, all of which fuse to reincarnate a much celebrated relic of the captured past. Ultimately, the film serves as a response to how Fuller’s production and performance prowess may be interpreted to fit in the cadence of the contemporary dance film rhythm.

THE INSPIRATION
With each frame tinted by hand, Loie Fuller’s Serpentine Dance came to be the first known dance recorded on camera. The original performance sees Fuller swathed in silks, swirling her arms in circular, repetitive gestures to provide momentary colorful glimpses on the garb’s fluid reflections. For Fuller, the motion never stops. The light, a potent strand of her living artistry, was intended by Fuller to adapt and transform into her atmosphere, which ended up being an emblematic conveyance of her “La Loie” stature. It was rumored that her last words were: “The light! The light!”

IN FULLER COLOR
Apart from her quest to stay ahead of her many imitators, Fuller patented numerous techniques from stage lighting to costume and set design over the course of her career. Her early inquiry into chemical gels and luminescence salts led her to become a prominent figure in history, having been one of the first to explore colored lighting. Her collaborators turned friends include the Lumiere Brothers, Marie Curie, and Thomas Edison.
