Director's Statement

Jiexiao is primarily concerned with topics relating to the human condition, of late particularly notions of loneliness and capriciousness.

Director's Biography

Jiexiao started dancing in NUS Dance Blast in 2003 with no background in dance, founding and heading the multi-award winning group, Little White Riding Hoods. He then joined NUS Dance Ensemble and was given opportunities to choreograph and perform for several platforms, namely the Next Wave and Evocation. Intrigued by contemporary dance, Jiexiao began foundational training in the PULSE programme at Frontier Danceland and was eventually invited to join T.H.E. 2nd Company, where he danced for 4 years. He has pursued contact improvisation, Axis Syllabus, physical theatre, and site-specific work, among others. He has also been extensively involved in pedagogy and has shot for numerous dance companies and productions in Singapore, all while creating several dance films of his own.

As an independent dance artist, he has collaborated with visual artist Jaxton Su for the "Colours in Motion" project. Jiexiao has presented his own full-length production in September 2017 commissioned by NUS Centre For the Arts (CFA), as well as a full-length duet, “Corked”, on top of his solo performances. His dance films have won laurels and awards at more than 45 film festivals internationally. He now runs his own studio space shared with three other visual artists, and is an associate of the Singapore independent dance community Dance Nucleus.
